Orthognathic, or “Corrective Jaw”, surgery is a specialized corrective surgery performed only by oral and maxillofacial surgeons. The procedure can correct a wide range of skeletal and dental problems, most notably the misalignment of jaws. While orthognathic surgery is primarily performed to correct misalignment and other functional issues (such as chewing, breathing and speaking), the patient’s physical appearance is also often significantly enhanced. Here is a brief list of some of the most common conditions that might result in a recommendation for corrective jaw surgery:
- Receding jaw and chin
- Protruding jaw
- Sleep apnea
- Unbalanced facial appearance
- Facial injuries
- Birth defects
- Chronic jaw pain
- Difficulty chewing or biting
- Open bite
