Though many people only have experience with oral surgery during their teenage years for wisdom tooth extraction or later in life with dental implant surgery, Hornbeck graduate Melissa Brown has been a regular oral surgery patient since she was a baby. Born with a cleft palate, fused upper vertebrae, and smaller-than-normal lower jaw, Melissa was introduced immediately to oral surgery to close her cleft palate. Nineteen surgeries and 18 years later, Melissa has grown past the days of difficult breathing and not being able to bite through sandwiches because of misaligned teeth and is on her way to studying biology at university.
